Synopsis from goodreads.com

Natasha: I’m a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I’m definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won’t be my story.

My thoughts

I found this book to be really cute and light. Its a coming of age story, although I’m in my late 20’s, I still appreciate young adult books. I really enjoyed the short chapters and wiki style information on certain topics like the word irie, Rastafarianism, and multiverses. There wasn’t anything complex about this book in terms of the style it was written in and choice of words, but the author, Nicola Yoon did attempt to touch some difficult topics but not in depth. The topic of culture clashes, race, Black women hair, Korean’s dominating the wig industry targeting black women, immigration issues, etc…

I loved loved loved Natasha and Daniel’s love story. Do I think it is possible to fall in love in ONE DAY?! definitely. You might get to know someone over the course of time, but it could just take one day to know that you want that person to be in your life forever, as your partner. I loved Daniel’s boldness in pursuing Natasha, I think his assurance in what they had was what convinced Natasha to come around. She could trust his love her. I believe that is what most women are looking for, a partner whose love they can trust and have faith in.

I also really love how the topic of fate or destiny was explored. The message was that, fate could happen, but you have to give it a little a push. Well at least that is what I got from it. That might not be fate at all but. . .

Irene really stood out to me as well. It was just a solid reminder to really pay attention to people, to really make people feel like they matter.

Overall, I liked this book. Its an easy summer read.
